No one knows for sure how long man has lived in this area but studies reveal that people enjoyed thisbeautiful area for thousands of years.Settlements stretched along Lake Michigan from Harbor Springsto Cross Village and the area became known as " The land of the crooked tree". One hundred and fiftyyears ago, the businessmen of Harbor Springs were fur traders. In 1874 the surrounding land wasopened to settlement and in 1882 the railroad was built. This was instrumental in developing the resorttrade.The population of Harbor Springs is roughly 1500 during the winter months and nearly triple thatin the summer.
